Leo's support to Special Olympics continues Back to news archive
Since a couple of years, Leo’s are volunteering together with Lions at Special Olympics. The vision of Special Olympics is 'Changing the lives of people with mental disabilities through sport!' This year, the event took place in Lommel, to which more than 4000 national athletes have been participating. During the four days of the games, we have been working at HAP, the Healthy Athletes Program. At the occasion, athletes are physically screened for free, and gain advice on good alimentation habits. Leo and Lions volunteers are supporting professionals during several screenings of teeth, feet, eyes, ears, body composition and other physical parameters.
Also next year, Leo’s will support Special Olympics at Doornik and Moeskroen from May 9-11, again through volunteering and some financial support. It will be Noémie Decorte, Leo Vice-President, that will be seating in the Special Olympics Lions Commission. She will ensure a smooth communication with Leo’s and will need their support to bring in as much stuff as possible to be able to offer a goodie bag to each athlete participating to HAP. It will be a good motivation for the athletes to participate to the screenings, so potential hidden physical issues can be detected on time.
And finally congrats to Lions, because Lions Clubs Belgium has won this year the first Golisano Global Health Leadership Award for their yearly significant contribution through volunteering and logistical and financial support (25000 euro each year) since more than 10 years.
